ForoImgLogoOn November 12-13, 2014, Mexico City hosted the Ninth Ibero-American Forum of Local Governments: “Education and Culture to Incorporate into the Local Sphere,” celebrated during the Fourteenth Ibero-American Conference of Heads of State and Governments, which took place on December 8-9 in Veracruz, Mexico. Its slogan was “Latin America in the 21st Century: Education, Freedom and Culture.”

Over 100 Latin American Mayors, Foremen, Prefects, Councilors, and Aldermen attended the conference, as well as representatives of the most important city networks in our region, such as the Latin American City Union (UCCI), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Mercociudades, and Redcisur.

The Forum held two plenary commissions called “Education and Culture for the inclusion in the public sphere” and “The Latin American Form in the framework of the Ibero-American Summit,” as well as four work tables: “Education and Social Cohesion: The Path Towards More Inclusive Cities;” “Culture as the Fourth Foundation of Development: Cultural Rights and Identity;” “Learning Cities and Culture as the Fourth Foundation of Development: Access to Goods and Cultural Services.”

The conference was able to promote solidarity, collaboration and cooperation for development, and to encourage joint actions in cultural, social and political fields among Latin American local governments, which led to the Final Declaration of the Ninth Ibero- American Forum of Local Governments, which established that:


lolEducation and culture are fundamental to the development of cities.

lolMexico City will be presiding over this forum’s Follow Up Commission, which will be held at the City Department of Latin America in Madrid, Spain, during the second trimester of 2015.

lolFurthermore, Bogota, Colombia was nominated to host the 10th Local Governments of Latin America Forum in 2016.
